Suwayda Crisis — Druze–Bedouin Clashes

July 13 – 19, 2025 · Suwayda Governorate Theater

Ceasefire; Bedouin fighters withdrawn; grievances unresolved

July 13 – 19, 2025

A robbery on the Damascus–Suwayda highway in July 2025 — a Druze merchant ambushed by Bedouin gunmen — escalated within days into the transition's second sectarian catastrophe. Tit-for-tat kidnappings spiraled into open fighting between Druze militias, Bedouin tribal fighters, and government forces sent to impose order but widely seen by the Druze as taking a side. Estimates of the dead range from about 594 to over 800; among roughly 300 Druze killed, investigators documented 83 summary executions by government forces. Israel, invoking the protection of Syria's Druze, struck Syrian armored columns advancing on the province and demanded a government withdrawal. President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced a ceasefire on July 19.
