Biography

The dominant figure of modern Irish republicanism, Gerry Adams rose from the Catholic ghettos of Belfast to lead Sinn Féin, the political wing of the republican movement, for over three decades. Interned without trial in the early Troubles and long alleged (though he always denied it) to have been a senior IRA commander, he became the chief architect of the movement's shift from the bomb toward the ballot box. Working secretly with the moderate nationalist John Hume, Adams steered the republican movement into ceasefires and the peace process, negotiating the Good Friday Agreement and persuading a militant movement to accept a compromise settlement and, eventually, to decommission its weapons. A deeply divisive figure — hero to republicans, terrorist sympathiser to unionists — he is nonetheless widely credited as indispensable to ending the war.

For years his voice was banned from British broadcast under a censorship order, so his words were dubbed by actors — a surreal feature of the era's media coverage.

The 1981 Hunger Strike

Irish Republicans (IRA) victory

May 5, 1981 · 10 total casualties

The hunger strikes were a pivotal propaganda victory for the republican movement, generating worldwide sympathy, a surge of IRA recruitment, and — crucially — the birth of Sinn Féin as a serious electoral force, launching the 'Armalite and ballot box' strategy that would eventually lead to peace.

The Good Friday Agreement

April 10, 1998 · 0 total casualties

The Good Friday Agreement effectively ended the Troubles, creating a durable if fragile peace and a template — power-sharing, consent, and inclusion of former combatants — studied by peacemakers worldwide. Its architects Hume and Trimble shared the Nobel Peace Prize.
