The Battle of Fan Castle

219 AD · Fan Castle and Jing Province (modern Hubei) Theater

Guan Yu killed; Shu permanently lost Jing Province to Wu. The Shu-Wu alliance collapsed, leading directly to the Battle of Yiling.

219 AD

Guan Yu, Liu Bei's greatest general and sworn brother, besieged the Wei fortress of Fan Castle and drowned an entire relief army by exploiting autumn floods on the Han River. For a moment he seemed poised to threaten Cao Cao's capital. But Sun Quan, alarmed by Shu's expansion, secretly allied with Wei. While Guan Yu's attention was fixed on Fan Castle, the Wu general Lü Meng disguised his warships as merchant boats and seized Guan Yu's base at Jiangling. Cut off, betrayed by his own garrison troops, Guan Yu was captured and beheaded.
