August 215 AD
With Cao Cao away campaigning in the west, Sun Quan attacked the strategic fortress of Hefei with 100,000 troops, defended by only 7,000 Wei soldiers under Zhang Liao. In a dawn sortie, Zhang Liao led just 800 picked men in a charge that plunged directly into Sun Quan's camp, nearly capturing the king himself. The audacity of the attack shattered Wu's morale, and Sun Quan withdrew after a failed two-week siege. During the retreat, Zhang Liao almost caught Sun Quan again at the Xiaoyao Ford.
