Battle of Yiling (Xiaoting)

222 AD · Yangtze Gorges (modern Hubei) Theater

Liu Bei's army annihilated; he retreated to Baidicheng and died in 223. Zhuge Liang became regent and eventually restored the alliance with Wu against Wei.

222 AD

Maddened by Guan Yu's death, Liu Bei ignored Zhuge Liang's counsel and invaded Wu with the bulk of Shu's army. The young Wu commander Lu Xun refused battle for months, letting Liu Bei's army string itself out along 700 li of forested gorges in the summer heat. When the Shu forces made camp in the forest, Lu Xun launched a coordinated fire attack that consumed the entire line. Liu Bei barely escaped and died of illness and grief in Baidicheng the following year.
