263 AD
By the 260s, Shu was exhausted and Wei — now effectively controlled by the Sima family — struck. The main Wei army under Zhong Hui pinned down Shu's border defenses while the audacious general Deng Ai led a force through unmapped mountain trails, crossing terrain so severe that his men wrapped themselves in felt and rolled down cliffs. Emerging behind Shu's defenses, Deng Ai defeated a hastily assembled defense at Mianzhu and marched on the capital Chengdu. The hapless last Shu emperor surrendered without a fight.
