Timur's former protege Tokhtamysh, whom he had helped place on the throne of the Golden Horde, turned against him and raided Timurid territory. Timur responded with a massive campaign deep into the steppe, tracking Tokhtamysh north to the Kondurcha River near the Volga. In a pitched battle involving perhaps 300,000 men on both sides, Timur's disciplined forces routed the Golden Horde army, though Tokhtamysh himself escaped.
