Biography
Bayezid I, known as 'Yildirim' (the Thunderbolt) for the speed of his campaigns, was the Ottoman sultan who came closest to strangling the Byzantine Empire before Timur intervened. He inherited a vigorous, expanding state from his father Murad I in 1389 and immediately proved himself a formidable conqueror, rapidly absorbing the remaining Turkish beyliks of Anatolia and blockading Constantinople. His greatest triumph was the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396, where he crushed a massive Crusader army led by the King of Hungary and the flower of French and Burgundian chivalry. With Constantinople nearly at his mercy and the Balkans firmly under Ottoman control, Bayezid seemed destined to complete the conquest his ancestors had begun. But in 1402, forced to turn east to face Timur's invasion, Bayezid met catastrophe at Ankara. His army was routed, and he himself was captured — the first and only Ottoman sultan taken alive by an enemy. He died in captivity in March 1403, reportedly from apoplexy, though later legends claimed Timur humiliated him in an iron cage. His empire plunged into a decade of civil war among his sons.
