Sultan Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud Shah Tughluq

Biography

Nasir-ud-Din Mahmud Shah Tughluq was the last effective sultan of the Tughluq dynasty, the once-powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. By the time Timur invaded India in 1398, the sultanate had already been weakened by decades of rebellion and fragmentation, with provincial governors operating as virtually independent rulers. When Timur's army approached Delhi in December 1398, Nasir-ud-Din attempted to meet him in battle outside the city walls. The Delhi army, which included war elephants armored and carrying incendiary devices, was routed when Timur countered the elephants with a devastating tactic: camels loaded with burning straw were driven into the elephant lines, causing them to panic and stampede through their own ranks. The sultan fled Delhi with a small retinue, and the city was given over to days of plunder, massacre, and fire. Nasir-ud-Din eventually returned to Delhi after Timur's departure but ruled only a devastated shell of a capital. He died in 1413, and the Tughluq dynasty was succeeded by the Sayyid dynasty — itself little more than a shadow sultanate that acknowledged Timurid suzerainty.
