Biography

Shah Rukh, the youngest and most capable of Timur's surviving sons, inherited the eastern portion of his father's empire and proved that the Timurid legacy could be one of creation as well as destruction. While his brothers and nephews tore at each other in brutal succession wars, Shah Rukh secured control of Herat and Khorasan, eventually bringing most of Timur's realm under his authority by the 1420s. Unlike his father, Shah Rukh governed as a patron of culture rather than a conqueror. His capital of Herat became one of the great centers of Islamic civilization, rivaling Samarkand. His wife Goharshad was herself a legendary patron of the arts and architecture, commissioning some of the finest mosques and madrasas of the period. Together they presided over the beginning of the Timurid Renaissance — a flowering of Persian miniature painting, poetry, architecture, and astronomy. Shah Rukh also pursued diplomacy with Ming China, exchanging embassies that restored Silk Road connections severed by decades of war. He died in 1447, and though the empire fragmented again after his death, the cultural golden age he nurtured continued under his grandson Ulugh Beg and the later Timurid courts.
