Biography
Tokhtamysh was a Genghisid prince of the Golden Horde who rose to power with Timur's direct support, only to become his most persistent enemy. Driven from his homeland by rivals in the 1370s, he sought refuge with Timur, who recognized his Genghisid legitimacy and backed his claim to the Golden Horde's throne. With Timurid military support, Tokhtamysh reunited the fragmented Golden Horde and in 1382 reasserted its authority by sacking Moscow — a blow that extended the Tatar Yoke over Russia for another century. But once enthroned, Tokhtamysh proved ungrateful and ambitious. He raided Timurid territory and challenged Timur's control of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. The resulting wars — the great battles of Kondurcha (1391) and Terek (1395) — were among the largest military encounters of the medieval world. Tokhtamysh lost both decisively, and after Terek, Timur systematically destroyed the Golden Horde's cities and trade routes. Tokhtamysh spent the rest of his life as a fugitive, seeking allies among the Lithuanians and others, and died around 1406, his once-great khanate in ruins.

The Terek was the death blow of the Golden Horde as a great power. Timur's destruction of Sarai and the Volga trade routes permanently crippled the khanate, creating a power vacuum that Moscow would eventually fill.
