After a month-long lull following the July pause, the IRGC launched ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and destroyer patrolling the Gulf. Both ships evaded without casualties. CENTCOM retaliated on September 5 by permanently disabling the IRGC crude oil carriers M/T Downy off Kharg Island and M/T Stark 1 near Jask, and completely destroying the unladen tanker M/T Kylo. CENTCOM described the vessels as part of a multibillion-dollar shadow network funding the IRGC and its regional proxies. Iran claimed retaliatory strikes against US-linked vessels.
