Three army groups cross the frontier
More than three million German troops, joined by allied forces, attacked the Soviet Union from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Tactical surprise and concentrated armored penetrations ruptured frontier defenses while Einsatzgruppen followed the armies into occupied territory.
