Operation Husky opens the campaign
U.S., British, Canadian, and other Allied forces land across southern Sicily. Airborne drops scatter widely, but the beachheads hold; Seventh and Eighth Armies advance on separate axes while German and Italian forces conduct a fighting withdrawal and evacuate many troops across Messina.
