Biography
Avigdor Kahalani's stand in the Valley of Tears is one of the most extraordinary individual performances in the history of armored warfare. In the Six-Day War, his tank had been hit and he suffered severe burns to 60% of his body — injuries so severe that his recovery took over a year and many doubted he would ever command again. He returned to active duty and by October 1973 commanded the 77th Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade on the Golan Heights. When 1,400 Syrian tanks poured through the Golan against his battalion's 36 tanks, Kahalani fought for three days without sleep, controlling his shrinking force by radio, rallying crews who were running out of ammunition, and maintaining discipline when his position was hopeless. When the final Syrian assault came on October 9, he had seven operational tanks. The Syrians withdrew — not knowing how few defenders remained. He was awarded the Medal of Valor, Israel's highest military decoration. He later entered politics and served as a cabinet minister.

The four-day counterattack completely erased Syria's initial gains and established the operational conditions for Israel's advance into Syria proper. Iraqi and Jordanian expeditionary forces rushed to reinforce Syria were caught in the open and destroyed by Israeli armor. The ability to transition from desperate defense to overwhelming counterattack within 48 hours demonstrated the IDF's extraordinary adaptive capacity.
