Imjin War · 1592 – 1598
This was the most technologically lopsided war of its century, and both sides were lopsided in different directions. On land Japan had spent fifty years perfecting the arquebus and the tactics around it, and Korea had nothing that answered it — Sin Rip's cavalry died at Tangeumdae the way the French died at Pavia. At sea the mismatch reversed completely: Japan built troop transports to close and board, Korea built gun platforms that never let them, and the entire invasion starved because of it. Meanwhile Ming heavy artillery outclassed both. Three military cultures met here, each dominant in one dimension, and the war was decided by whichever dimension mattered on the day.
Portuguese matchlocks reached Japan in 1543 and the Japanese immediately began making them better and in enormous quantity — by 1592 Japan probably had more firearms than any country on earth, and roughly a third of the invasion force carried one. Fifty years of civil war had also produced the tactics: rotating volley lines, disciplined fire by rank, and the doctrine to make a slow weapon continuous.
Significance
It decided every land battle of the first months. At Tangeumdae, Korea's best general put his heavy cavalry onto an open plain against massed arquebus fire and his army was annihilated in an afternoon — the same lesson Europe learned at Pavia in 1525, delivered to a country that had been at peace for two centuries and had never seen it coming.
The backbone of the Korean fleet and the reason it won: a strong, flat-bottomed, U-hulled ship with a raised upper deck, built as a gun platform. The flat bottom let it pivot in place in tidal shallows, and the hull was solid enough to carry heavy cannon and absorb the recoil — something Japanese hulls, built light and V-shaped for speed, could not do.
Significance
More important than the famous turtle ship, because there were dozens of these and only a handful of those. Korean naval architecture was accidentally perfect for the war it got: heavy guns, shallow tidal water, and the ability to turn on the spot and fire broadside after broadside while an enemy built for boarding tried and failed to close the distance.
The war's icon: a panokseon with a roofed-over deck studded with iron spikes, a reinforced ram bow, cannon firing from every side, and a dragon's head at the prow that emitted smoke. It was designed for exactly one purpose — to be un-boardable — and it was used as a shock vessel to smash into and break up Japanese formations at the head of the fleet.
Significance
Its fame slightly exceeds its importance; only a few were ever built, and Yi's victories were won by gunnery and manoeuvre far more than by turtle ships. But it was a precise answer to a specific enemy: Japan's whole naval method was to close and board, and here was a ship that simply could not be boarded, sitting in the middle of their formation firing outward.
Heavy bronze and iron guns named by rank — cheonja (heaven), jija (earth), hyeonja (black), hwangja (yellow) — firing iron balls and, distinctively, large heavy arrows that could smash through a light hull at close range. Mounted in numbers on the panokseon's reinforced deck, they outranged and outweighed anything the Japanese carried afloat.
Significance
This is what actually won the naval war. Japanese ships mounted few guns because their doctrine did not need them: you closed and you boarded. Yi turned that into a fatal assumption by fighting at a range where his guns worked and their swords did not. Twenty-three engagements, no defeats — an artillery navy against an infantry navy.
A two-wheeled cart carrying a honeycomb launcher of over a hundred singijeon — gunpowder-propelled arrows with their own small explosive charges — all fired in a single ripple. It was inaccurate, slow to reload, and devastating against a mass of men crowded onto a slope at close range.
Significance
Korea's best answer to the arquebus, and it saved Haengju. Gwon Yul's 3,000 defenders held a hilltop against roughly 30,000 attacking in nine waves, and the hwacha's ability to blanket the approaches with a hundred projectiles at once made the difference on ground where the Japanese could not deploy their firearms properly. Korea's problem was never technology as such — it was that it had no doctrine for using what it had until it was forced to invent one.
Li Rusong brought heavy Chinese cannon into Korea in the winter of 1592 — including the Portuguese-derived pieces the Ming called Frankish guns — and they were simply better than anything either combatant had. At Pyongyang they blew the walls open and drove Konishi's division out into the snow in a matter of days.
Significance
The third military culture in the war, and the one that broke the deadlock on land. It also demonstrated its own limits within seven weeks: at Byeokjegwan, Li outran his guns, pushed ahead with cavalry into narrow muddy ground, and was ambushed and nearly killed. He never willingly fought again. Ming artillery could win any battle it was present at and reached almost nowhere.
Once the advance stalled, the Japanese built a chain of some thirty stone fortresses along the southern Korean coast — the wajō — using the castle-building expertise a century of civil war had perfected. Sited on headlands with sea access, walls battered inward to shed shot, they were essentially unstormable, and Katō Kiyomasa's at Ulsan held out against a much larger army through a starving winter.
Significance
The reason the war lasted six years instead of two. Neither side could finish the other: the allies could not break into the wajō and the Japanese could not break out. The ruins are still there along the Korean coast, and Katō took the lesson home — he built Kumamoto castle with nut trees in the grounds and edible taro stalks in the tatami, because he had nearly starved at Ulsan.
The Korean composite horn bow, short, brutally powerful, and outranging the arquebus considerably — a good archer could shoot further, far faster, and in the rain. It was the Korean army's signature weapon and its officers had trained on it since childhood.
Significance
A better weapon than the arquebus by most measures, and it lost anyway — which is the whole point. The arquebus needed a fortnight to teach and the bow needed a decade; Japan could turn peasants into shot and Korea could not turn peasants into archers. The war is a demonstration that the decisive property of a weapon is often not its performance but how fast you can make a man useful with it.
Not a weapon but the thing that made the occupation impossible. As the regular army disintegrated, local militias raised themselves — led by scholars, landowners, and Buddhist abbots, with warrior monks under Hyujeong and Yujeong forming some of the most effective units. They did not fight battles; they ambushed supply columns, cut roads, and made every Japanese-held district a place that had to be garrisoned.
Significance
The uibyeong rose without the state and largely in spite of it — the same population that burned the slave registries before the Japanese arrived then organised its own defence. Combined with Yi's closure of the sea, they turned occupied Korea into a country that could be taken but not held or fed. The Japanese held cities and roads and nothing in between.
Japanese infantry were the finest close-quarters fighters in the world in 1592, products of a century of continuous war, and the sword work was genuinely superior to anything Korea fielded. Japanese doctrine at sea was built entirely on this advantage: get alongside, board, and win the fight on the deck.
Significance
The strength that became the fatal weakness. Because Japan's soldiers were unbeatable at arm's length, Japan's navy never seriously invested in guns — and Yi Sun-sin's entire method was to make sure that arm's length never happened. A hundred metres of water turned the best infantry on earth into targets. Being excellent at one thing shaped a doctrine that could not adapt when the enemy simply declined it.
The south-west Korean coast is a maze of islands and channels with some of the largest tidal ranges and fastest currents in Asia. At Myeongnyang the water runs at around ten knots and reverses direction. Yi Sun-sin had spent years learning it; the Japanese pilots had not.
Significance
Yi's most underrated weapon, and the one that made thirteen ships beat over 130. He chose the strait because a large fleet physically could not deploy in it, and the current would break their formation for him. Every one of his major victories used the water as much as the guns — Hansan was won by luring the Japanese *out* of narrow water into open sea, Myeongnyang by luring them *into* it. Local knowledge as a weapon system.
Hideyoshi paid his commanders by verified kill, and heads were too bulky to ship across the sea — so noses were taken instead, salted into barrels and sent to Japan with certified counts. The quotas meant they were taken from combatants and civilians without much distinction, and from the living as well as the dead.
Significance
An accounting mechanism that became an atrocity engine, which is the honest way to describe it. It industrialised the killing of non-combatants because the metric did not care, and it produced the war's most durable monument: the Mimizuka in Kyoto, the 'ear mound,' where tens of thousands of Korean noses lie under a grave marker that still stands and that Korean visitors still come to see, four hundred years later.

Japan won essentially every land engagement of 1592 and took Seoul in twenty days, Pyongyang in two months. It still lost, because the plan depended on feeding the northern armies by sea and Yi Sun-sin closed the sea at Hansan Island in August. A hundred and fifty-eight thousand men then had to be supplied overland through a countryside in armed revolt.
Legacy
One of the cleanest demonstrations in military history that an army that cannot be fed is not an army, however well it fights. The invasion was not defeated in the field — it stopped where it stood and rotted. Hideyoshi's response, ordering his navy to avoid Yi altogether, was an admission that the war was already lost and that he had no answer.
Two naval doctrines met and one of them simply did not work. Japan built light fast transports to close and board, crewed by the best close-combat infantry alive; Korea built heavy flat-bottomed gun platforms and, in the turtle ship, a vessel that could not be boarded at all. Yi Sun-sin's entire method was to fight at a range where his cannon worked and their swords did not.
Legacy
Europe was learning the identical lesson in the identical decade — the Armada in 1588 was decided by English guns against Spanish boarders — and the two hemispheres arrived at it independently, without contact. When the same answer emerges twice on opposite sides of the world, it is a fact about gunpowder rather than about either culture.
The Korean composite bow outranged the arquebus, shot far faster, and worked in the rain. It lost anyway. The arquebus took a fortnight to teach and the bow took a decade, so Japan could turn any peasant into a soldier and Korea could not. The same arithmetic had already killed the French knight at Pavia and the Swiss pikeman at Bicocca.
Legacy
The decisive property of a military technology is frequently not how well it performs but how fast it makes a man useful. It is why gunpowder infantry displaced every skilled-warrior tradition on earth within a century and a half, and it is why the change was social as much as tactical: mass armies became possible the moment expertise stopped being the bottleneck.
By 1593 the Japanese were dug into thirty coastal fortresses they could not break out of, and the allies could not break in. So both sides negotiated — and Konishi Yukinaga and the Ming envoy Shen Weijing spent three years running a mutual fraud, each telling his own ruler the other was surrendering. The Ming believed Hideyoshi was accepting vassal status; Hideyoshi believed he was getting a Ming princess and half of Korea.
Legacy
It collapsed in 1596 when the Ming envoys arrived to crown Hideyoshi 'King of Japan' in front of him, and the second invasion followed. What eventually ended the war was not a battle or a treaty but Hideyoshi's death in 1598 — six years, a million dead, and the whole thing was cancelled because one man stopped breathing. Shimazu won a brilliant victory six weeks later because nobody had told him.
Hideyoshi unified Japan in 1590 and inherited hundreds of thousands of professional warriors who had known nothing but war for a century. Peace made them simultaneously useless and dangerous — sending them home risked the rebellion that unification was meant to end. Korea was, among other things, somewhere to point them.
Legacy
The invasion destroyed the dynasty it was partly meant to secure. It killed and exhausted the western daimyō, drained the treasury, split the Toyotomi camp through the Konishi–Katō feud, and left Tokugawa Ieyasu untouched at home in the east. Sekigahara followed in two years and the Toyotomi were extinct in seventeen. The problem of what to do with a victorious army has rarely been answered worse.
In 1591, over the objections of better-connected men, Ryu Seong-ryong pushed a twice-demoted officer with no patrons into an obscure southern naval command. Yi Sun-sin used the year he had to repair ships, drill crews, and build turtle ships for a war his government had officially decided was not coming. Everything else follows from that.
Legacy
It is worth stating plainly how narrow this was. The same court that made the appointment later believed a planted Japanese forgery, arrested Yi, tortured him, and handed the fleet to the rival who lost all of it in one night. Korea survived because one official made one unpopular personnel decision, and nearly did not survive because the rest of the court then spent five years trying to undo it.
