"I will assemble a mighty host and invade the country of the great Ming. I shall fill the sky with the light of my name."

Biography

The most extraordinary social ascent in Japanese history: born a peasant's son in Owari, Hideyoshi joined Oda Nobunaga as a sandal-bearer and ended as master of Japan. He was small, unprepossessing, and nicknamed 'monkey'; he was also the finest political operator of his age, and after Nobunaga's murder in 1582 he out-manoeuvred every rival and completed the unification by 1590. Then he had a problem: a hundred years of civil war had left him with the largest, most experienced, most heavily gunpowder-armed military establishment on earth, and nothing for it to do. Demobilising a class of professional warriors was more dangerous than employing them. He decided to conquer Ming China, with Korea as the road, and told the Koreans to either join him or be trampled. He appears to have genuinely believed he would rule from Beijing, and he assigned court positions in a Chinese empire he had not yet reached. He never set foot in Korea. He directed the war from Nagoya castle in Kyushu and from Japan, ordered Jinju destroyed to erase a personal humiliation, and demanded noses by the barrel as proof of kills. He died in 1598 with his armies bogged down and his dynasty doomed — his last recorded words worried about his five-year-old son, whom the Tokugawa destroyed within seventeen years. The invasion's only durable achievement was to exhaust the Ming, ruin Korea, and end his own house.

Did you know?

He rose from peasant sandal-bearer to absolute ruler of Japan, then froze the class system behind him with a sword hunt and edicts that made such a rise permanently impossible for anyone else.

Key Battles

The Landing at Busan

Toyotomi Japan victory

May 25, 1592 · 8,500 total casualties

Korea had not fought a real war in two centuries; Japan had just finished fighting one for a hundred years. The gap showed instantly. Every Japanese soldier who landed was a veteran of the Sengoku wars and a third of them carried arquebuses, a weapon the Korean army had essentially no answer to. Within three weeks the Japanese would be in Seoul.

The Fall of Hanseong

Toyotomi Japan victory

June 12, 1592 · 500 total casualties

The speed is the story: 450 kilometres in three weeks against a state that had been at peace for two hundred years. But the burning of the slave registers by Koreans, before any Japanese soldier arrived, says something else — the dynasty had lost its people's loyalty before it lost its capital. Seonjo's flight nearly ended the Joseon dynasty then and there, and he was still considering crossing into China when the news came from the sea.

The Second Siege of Jinju

Toyotomi Japan victory

July 27, 1593 · 63,000 total casualties

The worst atrocity of the war and one of the deadliest single events in Korean history: the fortress was taken purely to erase an insult, during peace negotiations, with no strategic object. It is remembered alongside the kisaeng Non'gae, who is said to have embraced a Japanese commander at the victory banquet and thrown them both off the cliff into the Nam river.

Siege of Ulsan

December 1597 – January 1598 · 20,000 total casualties

The war's condition in miniature by 1598: both sides dug into the southern coast, neither able to finish the other, everyone starving. The Japanese held a chain of coastal fortresses they could not break out of; the allies could not break in. It would have gone on indefinitely, and the thing that ended it was not a battle at all — it was a death in Kyoto.
