Modern source criticism places the principal early Umayyad attempt against Constantinople in 667–669 under Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. Later Byzantine tradition reshaped several naval campaigns into a continuous siege in 674–678 and associated their defeat with Greek Fire; the exact sequence remains debated.
