The Surrender of Jerusalem

April 637 · Palestine Theater

Jerusalem surrenders to Caliph Umar on terms; Christians are guaranteed protection.

April 637

After Yarmouk left Palestine defenceless, the holy city of Jerusalem was besieged and then surrendered on terms. The Patriarch Sophronius insisted on handing over the city only to the Caliph himself, and Umar came from Medina, entering the city humbly and guaranteeing the safety of its Christian inhabitants and their churches in a famous covenant.
