A year after the October 2025 ceasefire, Gaza was neither at war nor at peace. By mid-October 2026 nearly two-thirds of the territory was under Israeli military control or access restrictions — 65 percent by OCHA's count — and on October 11 Israeli forces moved the yellow-line markers dozens of metres further west in Gaza City's Shujayea district. Killing continued at a lower rate: the Gaza Health Ministry counted 1,460 Palestinians killed since the ceasefire on October 7, 2026, and 1,538 by October 22. In mid-October Israel suspended commercial deliveries and closed the crossings for nearly a week; on October 19 the World Food Programme, citing a funding shortfall, cut the number of people it fed from 1.6 million to 1.1 million and halved rations, and the price of bread more than doubled while eggs rose about 300 percent in a week. Euro-Med Monitor warned that Gaza could face another famine. Israeli officials, for their part, told US counterparts that Hamas was rebuilding its forces and much of its tunnel network rather than disarming.
