Biography

The political face of Hamas, Haniyeh operated from Qatar where he led the organization's international diplomacy, ceasefire negotiations, and funding relationships with Iran and Gulf donors. Born in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza, he rose through the Muslim Brotherhood and became Hamas's prime minister in Gaza (2006–2014) before relocating to Qatar as chairman of the political bureau. He was killed in Tehran on July 31, 2024 — in a strike widely attributed to Israel — while attending the inauguration of Iran's new president. His death, while publicly playing a diplomatic role, shocked Iran and the region.

Three of his sons and four of his grandchildren were killed in an IDF airstrike in Gaza in April 2024 — weeks before he was himself assassinated in Tehran.

Key Battles

October 7 Attack

Hamas / Palestinian Factions victory

October 7, 2023 · 1,500 total casualties

The most deadly attack on Jewish people since the Holocaust. The failure of Israel's surveillance and barrier system — considered state-of-the-art — was a catastrophic intelligence failure. The attack triggered Israel's declaration of war, the largest military mobilization since 1973, and a military campaign that would reshape Gaza entirely.

Battle of Khan Younis

Israel / IDF victory

December 2023 – April 2024 · 20,000 total casualties

Khan Younis was the operational center of Hamas's military command. The battle's intensity and civilian cost drove the ICJ's emergency orders demanding Israel ensure humanitarian access. The hostage crisis became increasingly acute as families of the remaining captives held mass protests in Tel Aviv.
