The gladius was a short, broad, double-edged thrusting sword roughly 60 cm long, worn on the right hip and drawn for close-quarters killing. Behind the protection of the shield wall, legionaries used short stabbing thrusts to the belly and groin — wounds that were more reliably lethal than slashing cuts.

Significance

Pilum (Heavy Javelin)

The pilum was a heavy throwing spear with a long iron shank and a soft neck designed to bend on impact, so that it could not easily be thrown back and would foul an enemy's shield. Each legionary typically carried two, hurling them in a volley just before closing with the gladius.

Significance

A massed pilum volley could shatter the cohesion of a charge or break up a rebel sortie before contact, softening the enemy for the legionary assault that followed. It was a signature element of the combined-arms drill that made Roman infantry so formidable.

The legionary's defense combined the large curved rectangular shield (scutum) with segmented plate armor (lorica segmentata) of overlapping iron strips, plus a helmet with cheek and neck guards. Locked together, scuta could form the 'testudo' (tortoise) — a shell of shields that protected an assault column from missiles raining down from a city's walls.

Significance

Significance

Siege Ramps, Towers & Circumvallation

Rome's true war-winning technology was its engineering. Legions built ramps of earth and timber to bring rams and towers against high walls — the Masada ramp still scars the mountainside today — raised mobile siege towers, drove battering rams under protective sheds, and threw walls of circumvallation entirely around a target to seal it off and starve it. The siege wall around Jerusalem turned the whole city into a trap.

Significance

Significance
