132 AD
Provoked by Hadrian's plan to build a pagan colony (Aelia Capitolina) on Jerusalem's ruins and, sources suggest, a ban on circumcision, Simon bar Kokhba launched a meticulously prepared revolt. Using a network of tunnels and hideouts, the rebels overran Roman garrisons, expelled the Tenth Legion's outposts, and established an independent Judean state for roughly three years — minting their own coins proclaiming the 'Freedom of Israel.' Rabbi Akiva hailed bar Kokhba as the Messiah.
