October – November 67 AD
Gamla, a steep camel-backed ridge town in the Golan, defied Vespasian for a month. A first Roman assault broke into the town but was repelled with heavy losses when houses collapsed under the weight of crowded fighters. A second assault succeeded; according to Josephus thousands of defenders were killed and many flung themselves from the cliffs rather than be taken. Only two women were said to have survived.
