May – July 67 AD
Vespasian opened his campaign by reducing the fortified Galilean town of Jotapata (Yodfat), defended by the rebel commander — and future historian — Josephus. For forty-seven days the defenders resisted siege ramps, battering rams, and assaults, but the town finally fell. Tens of thousands were killed or enslaved. Josephus and a band of survivors hid in a cave and made a suicide pact; Josephus survived, surrendered to Vespasian, and prophesied that the general would become emperor.
