The Mexican Revolution was fought with a mix of Díaz-era surplus weapons, American commercial arms, and improvised technologies. The Federal Army inherited Porfirio Díaz's modernized military equipment — German Mauser rifles, French Hotchkiss machine guns, and Krupp artillery — while the revolutionary factions initially relied on whatever they could capture, purchase across the U.S. border, or improvise. As the war progressed, the U.S. border became the crucial supply line: Winchester repeating rifles, Colt revolvers, and Springfield rifles flowed south during periods when the arms embargo was relaxed. Both sides used armored trains as mobile fortresses on the extensive Mexican rail network. At Celaya in 1915, Obregón introduced World War I-style defensive tactics — barbed wire, machine-gun nests, coordinated artillery — that proved devastating against Villa's traditional cavalry charges. Both sides used military aircraft for reconnaissance by 1913–1914, making the Mexican Revolution one of the first conflicts in Latin American history to see aerial operations. The standard rifle of the Díaz Federal Army, the Mexican Mauser was a variant of the German Gewehr 98 chambered in 7×57mm. Mexico had purchased large stocks during the Porfiriato's military modernization, and Federal arsenals were full of them when the Revolution began. As the federales were defeated, their Mausers passed to the revolutionary factions — the rifle became ubiquitous on all sides. The Curtiss JN-3 biplane was the primary aircraft used by the U.S. Army's 1st Aero Squadron during the Punitive Expedition. The 'Jenny' was fragile and underpowered, with a 90 horsepower engine that struggled in the thin air and turbulent winds of Mexico's Sierra Madre. Álvaro Obregón's decisive innovation at Celaya was to import WWI trench tactics to Mexico. He ordered his engineers to dig a network of trenches around Celaya's perimeter, string multiple layers of barbed wire before the trenches, and position Hotchkiss machine guns in fortified nests with interlocking fields of fire. This defensive system, familiar to anyone who had read about the Western Front but novel in Mexican warfare, was completely impervious to the cavalry charges that Villa employed. The barbed wire entangled horses and riders while machine guns cut them down. Obregón had approximately 11,000 men against Villa's 25,000 — and won decisively.
