After turning against Madero's government, former revolutionary general Pascual Orozco — Villa and Orozco had been allies at Ciudad Juárez — defeated a federal army at Rellano, killing the federal commander General González Salas. The battle demonstrated that the revolutionary factions were already fracturing and that Madero faced enemies from within the revolutionary movement as well as conservative opposition. Villa, still loyal to Madero, was dispatched to fight his former ally Orozco.
