Biography

Hong Taiji, Nurhaci's eighth son, seized power after his father's death through a combination of political maneuvering and personal charisma. Where Nurhaci had been a warlord and state-builder, Hong Taiji was a statesman who transformed the Later Jin from a frontier raiding power into a genuine alternative to the Ming dynasty. He renamed the Jurchen people 'Manchu,' renamed the state 'Qing' in 1636, and adopted Chinese-style imperial institutions wholesale. Militarily, Hong Taiji conquered Inner Mongolia, forced Korea into vassalage, and led devastating raids deep into Ming territory that bypassed the Great Wall fortifications. He was the architect of the strategy of encouraging Ming defections through generous treatment of surrendered officers — a policy that would prove decisive in the final conquest. He incorporated captured Chinese artillery and artillerymen into the Manchu military, eliminating the technological advantage that had killed his father at Ningyuan. He died suddenly in 1643, just months before Li Zicheng's rebellion would crack the Ming wide open and create the opportunity his life's work had prepared for.

Hong Taiji was so grief-stricken by the death of his favorite consort, Empress Xiaoduan, that he fell into a depression that may have contributed to his own sudden death months later.
