Chapter 1 · 1618 – 1636

Rise of the Manchus

A minor chieftain forges the Jurchen tribes into a state that will conquer China

The Manchu conquest of China began not with an invasion but with a grievance. In 1618, Nurhaci — a Jurchen chieftain who had spent thirty years unifying the fractious tribes of Manchuria — proclaimed his Seven Grievances against the Ming dynasty: unprovoked murders of his father and grandfather, interference in Jurchen politics, and violations of the frontier boundary. It was a declaration of war against the most populous empire on earth by a confederation of forest-dwelling hunters who numbered perhaps a million people.

What made the Manchus dangerous was not numbers but organization. Nurhaci's great innovation was the Eight Banners system — a military-social structure that organized his entire people into eight color-coded divisions that served simultaneously as army units, administrative districts, and communities. Every Manchu man was a soldier; every family belonged to a banner. The result was a society permanently mobilized for war, with a cavalry arm that could concentrate and maneuver with a speed the ponderous Ming bureaucratic military could not match.

The Ming's response was catastrophic overconfidence. In 1619, they assembled a massive four-pronged expeditionary force of nearly 90,000 troops to crush Nurhaci in a single campaign. At the Battle of Sarhu, Nurhaci exploited the poor coordination between the four columns, concentrating his entire force against each one in turn and destroying three armies in three days. After Sarhu, the Ming never again mounted a credible offensive in Manchuria. By 1621, Nurhaci had captured Shenyang and Liaoyang, the principal Ming cities of Liaodong.

The Manchus were not invincible. At Ningyuan in 1626, the Ming general Yuan Chonghuan demonstrated that European-designed cannon could shatter the Manchu cavalry charges that had swept all before them. Nurhaci, who had never suffered a significant defeat, was forced to withdraw and died eight months later. But his son Hong Taiji proved an even more formidable leader — a statesman who transformed a tribal confederation into a genuine alternative state, renaming the people 'Manchu' and the dynasty 'Qing' in 1636. By then, however, the Ming was collapsing from within.

"With seven great grievances I raise the standard against the Ming."
