Born: September 23, 1215 · Mongolia
Died: February 18, 1294 · Dadu (Beijing), China
Education: Studied Chinese governance and statecraft as a prince
Pre-war: Mongol prince; Great Khan and Emperor of China
"I have been told that one can conquer an empire on horseback, but one cannot govern it on horseback."

Biography

Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis, completed the conquest of China and transformed the Mongols from steppe raiders into the rulers of a settled empire. After a long war he destroyed the Southern Song in 1279, uniting all of China for the first time under a foreign dynasty — the Yuan, which he had founded in 1271. He moved his capital to Dadu (modern Beijing) and increasingly governed in the Chinese manner, patronizing arts, building a grand capital, and embracing the role of a Chinese emperor. His reign marked the zenith of the unified Mongol realm and the height of the Pax Mongolica, when trade and travel crossed Eurasia in unprecedented safety — it was Kublai's China that the Venetian Marco Polo described in wonder. Yet his ambitions overreached: his two massive seaborne invasions of Japan (1274 and 1281) ended in catastrophe when typhoons destroyed his fleets, and costly expeditions into Southeast Asia largely failed. By his death in 1294 the once-unified Mongol Empire had fragmented into rival khanates, though his Yuan dynasty ruled China until 1368.

Key Battles

The Mongol Invasions of Japan

Opposing States & Peoples victory

1274 & 1281 · 130,000 total casualties

The invasions were among the largest amphibious operations in pre-modern history and among the Mongols' most spectacular failures. The Japanese credited their deliverance to divine winds — the kamikaze — a belief that entered the national consciousness and echoed, centuries later, in the Second World War. The disasters checked Mongol expansion across the eastern seas.

The Conquest of Song China (Battle of Yamen)

Mongol Empire victory

March 19, 1279 · 100,000 total casualties

Yamen extinguished the Song dynasty and completed the Mongol conquest of all China — the first time the entire country had been ruled by a foreign people. Kublai's Yuan dynasty now governed the most populous and wealthy land on earth, anchoring an empire that stretched across Eurasia, even as the once-unified Mongol realm fractured into rival khanates.
