The Unification of the Steppe

The greatest conqueror in history began life as a hunted outcast. Born around 1162 and named Temüjin, he was the son of a minor chieftain who was poisoned by rivals when the boy was young, leaving the family abandoned on the harsh Mongolian steppe to survive on roots and fish. He was enslaved, escaped, and clawed his way upward through a world of shifting tribal alliances, blood feuds, and betrayals.

What set Temüjin apart was not merely courage but a genius for organization and loyalty. He rewarded followers by merit rather than birth, shared plunder fairly, punished treachery without mercy, and bound men to him with an intensity the fractious steppe had never seen. One by one he defeated, absorbed, or destroyed the great tribal confederations — the Tatars, the Keraites, the Naimans — welding the perpetually warring nomads into a single people.

In 1206 a great assembly of the tribes, the kurultai, proclaimed him Genghis Khan — 'Universal Ruler.' He reorganized his nation entirely on military lines, into units of tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten-thousands (the tumen), deliberately mixing the old tribes so that loyalty flowed only to him. He gave his people a written script and a code of law, the Yassa, and forged the most disciplined and mobile fighting force in the world.

He now commanded perhaps a hundred thousand horsemen, every one a lifelong rider and archer, capable of covering enormous distances and living off the land and their herds. Surrounding this poor, hungry, and now unified nation were the immensely rich settled civilizations of China, Central Asia, and Persia. Genghis Khan turned his perfected war machine outward — and the world would never be the same.
