Biography
Subutai, the son of a humble blacksmith, became the greatest general of the Mongol Empire and one of the most successful military commanders in all of history, directing campaigns across an unmatched span of Eurasia. A master of strategy, intelligence, and coordinated maneuver over vast distances, he planned and led operations from China to the heart of Europe, reportedly winning dozens of battles and conquering more territory than any other commander. His masterpiece was the invasion of Europe in 1241. Coordinating armies hundreds of miles apart, he crushed the Hungarians at Mohi while another Mongol force destroyed a Polish-German army at Legnica two days earlier — a feat of planning and timing that astonished later students of war. He pioneered the use of feigned retreats, deep reconnaissance, deception, and combined-arms tactics on a continental scale. Only the death of the Great Khan Ögedei halted his advance and recalled the army from Europe's threshold; Subutai died, undefeated, in 1248.
