Both sides in the Russian Civil War fought primarily with the weapons and equipment of the First World War — the vast arsenals of the Imperial Russian Army, supplemented by Allied supplies and, for the Whites, British tanks and equipment. The defining weapons of the conflict were the Mosin-Nagant rifle, carried by virtually every soldier on both sides, and the Maxim machine gun, whose water-cooled barrel and devastating rate of fire dominated both offense and defense. The war's most iconic innovation was the tachanka — a horse-drawn cart mounting a Maxim gun — which gave cavalry units machine-gun firepower while retaining the mobility of horse warfare, and which became the signature weapon of the Russian steppes. The Reds made extensive use of armored trains — moving fortresses mounting artillery and machine guns that could dominate railway corridors across the vast flat landscape. White forces, particularly the Volunteer Army and units in the north supplied by Britain, used Lewis Guns to provide squad-level automatic fire support. The gun was a significant technological advantage when White forces had adequate ammunition, but Allied supply lines were inconsistent.

The tanks were used by Denikin's forces in 1919 and had a terrifying psychological effect on Red Army troops who had never seen armored vehicles before. However, the Whites lacked trained tank crews, experienced mechanics, and adequate spare parts. Tanks broke down frequently, were difficult to repair in the field, and could be immobilized by concentrated artillery fire or by being driven into soft ground. Red Army commanders quickly learned to concentrate artillery on tanks and to dig ditches to trap them.
