Russo-Turkish War · 1877 – 1878
The Russo-Turkish War was fought at the dawn of the age of the breech-loader, and its battles previewed the future of war. Ottoman infantry armed with superb American-made rifles and dug into earthworks slaughtered the massed Russian columns at Plevna, demonstrating the new dominance of the entrenched defensive. On the Danube and the Black Sea, meanwhile, the war saw the first combat use of the self-propelled torpedo — a weapon that would remake naval warfare.
The Ottoman infantry's principal arm was the American-designed Peabody-Martini, a hard-hitting single-shot breech-loader firing a heavy .45 cartridge to long range. Hundreds of thousands were bought from the Providence Tool Company in the United States, and in the hands of Osman Pasha's entrenched troops at Plevna they cut down the attacking Russian columns at distances the Russians could not answer.
Significance
The Peabody-Martini gave the Ottoman defence a decisive long-range edge and was central to the slaughter at Plevna — a case study in how a well-armed, entrenched infantry could defeat far larger attacking forces.
The Ottomans also bought tens of thousands of Winchester Model 1866 lever-action repeaters, which they used alongside the Peabody-Martini in a deadly two-rifle system: the long-range Martini to break up an assault at a distance, then the fast-firing Winchester to drench the final rush with close-range fire. At Plevna the combination turned the redoubts into killing grounds.

The Ottoman pairing of a long-range breech-loader with a close-range repeater was a tactical innovation that maximised firepower at every range and made frontal assault on their earthworks catastrophic.
The best Russian infantry rifle of the war was the Berdan II, a bolt-action single-shot breech-loader designed with American help, firing a 10.75 mm cartridge. It was a fine weapon — but too few were available, and many Russian units still carried the older, inferior Krnka conversion rifles, leaving Russian infantry generally outgunned by the Ottomans.
Significance
The Berdan was the ancestor of the famous Russian 'berdanka' and a solid rifle, but the Russian army's uneven small-arms modernisation was one reason its infantry suffered so terribly in the frontal assaults of the war.
Both armies fielded modern steel breech-loading field guns, many from the German firm of Krupp — the Ottomans in particular had re-equipped with excellent Krupp artillery. These rifled, breech-loading guns fired further, faster, and more accurately than the muzzle-loaders of a generation before, adding to the lethality of the defensive at Plevna and Shipka.
Significance
Krupp's steel guns marked the artillery revolution of the era, and their presence on both sides made the battlefields of 1877 far deadlier than those of the Crimean War two decades earlier.
The Ottoman defensive system at Plevna — a ring of mutually supporting earthwork redoubts, rifle pits, and entrenchments thrown up by Osman Pasha's men — was the true war-winning 'weapon' of the defence. Cheap, quickly dug, and nearly invulnerable to frontal assault, the earthworks multiplied the effect of the modern rifle many times over.

Barred from the Black Sea by treaty from keeping a battle fleet, the Russians improvised a mosquito navy of small steam launches carrying spar torpedoes and the new self-propelled Whitehead torpedo. In January 1878 Lieutenant Stepan Makarov's launches sank the Ottoman gunboat Intibah off Batumi — the first successful attack in history by a self-propelled torpedo.

The Russian army's irregular Cossack horsemen provided its reconnaissance, screening, raiding, and pursuit, ranging ahead of the columns through the Balkans and harassing the Ottoman flanks and rear. Their mobility was essential in the mountainous, roadless theatre.

Cossack cavalry gave the Russians their eyes and their reach across difficult country, though against entrenched riflemen the day of the cavalry charge was clearly passing.
The Russians deployed early rapid-fire weapons — Gatling guns and volley-firing mitrailleuses — in limited numbers, among the first battlefield uses of the machine gun's ancestors. Their tactical value was still poorly understood, and they played only a minor role compared with the rifle and cannon.

The appearance of the Gatling on the battlefields of 1877 marked an early step toward the machine gun that would dominate the wars of the next century.
The war was moved and coordinated by rail and wire: Russia's mobilisation and supply depended on its railways to the frontier, and the electric telegraph linked commanders, governments, and — crucially — the war correspondents whose dispatches reached European newspapers within days.

Railways and telegraphy made this a modern war of logistics and public opinion, in which the movement of supplies and the management of news mattered almost as much as the movement of armies.
To neutralise the Ottoman river fleet and protect their crossing points, Russian engineers laid extensive fields of naval mines across the Danube, hemming in the enemy monitors and helping secure the pontoon bridges over which the invasion flowed.

The systematic use of mines to control a contested waterway showed how the new industrial weapons of the sea could offset an enemy's advantage in warships, a lesson carried into later naval wars.

The war advanced the modern relationship between mass media, public emotion, and foreign policy — the power of published atrocity and reported heroism to move nations toward or against war.
After frontal assaults failed, Totleben's reduction of Plevna by total encirclement and blockade revived the engineer's scientific approach to siege warfare — starving out a fortress rather than storming it — updated for the age of the modern rifle.

Totleben's method reaffirmed that against a well-armed, entrenched enemy, patience, engineering, and logistics could succeed where courage and numbers only produced massacre — a principle of industrial-age siege warfare.
