The Advance to San Stefano

January – March 1878 · Thrace, approaches to Constantinople Theater

Ottoman surrender; Treaty of San Stefano (March 1878), soon revised at the Congress of Berlin.

January – March 1878

With their armies destroyed, the Ottomans abandoned Adrianople without a fight and sued for peace as Russian troops advanced to San Stefano, a village within sight of Constantinople. There, in March 1878, the Treaty of San Stefano was signed, creating a large autonomous Bulgaria — only for the alarmed Great Powers to force its revision months later at the Congress of Berlin.
