Carol I of Romania

Prince (later King) of Romania; Allied Commander

Born: 1839 · Sigmaringen, Hohenzollern (modern Germany)
Died: 1914 · Sinaia, Romania
Education: Prussian military academy; served as a Prussian officer
Pre-war: Prussian army officer, then Prince of Romania from 1866
"Romania needs this war to be born as a nation."

Biography

The German-born prince Carol I brought Romania — still nominally an Ottoman vassal — into the war on Russia's side, and his intervention proved decisive at the moment of crisis. When the second Russian assault on Plevna failed, it was Carol, given overall command of the allied siege forces, and his Romanian army that helped storm the redoubts and complete the encirclement of Osman Pasha. Romanian troops paid heavily in blood at Plevna and Grivitsa, and in return Romania emerged from the war fully independent of the Ottoman Empire, its sovereignty recognised at the Congress of Berlin. In 1881 Carol crowned himself the first King of Romania with a crown forged from a captured Ottoman cannon, and he reigned for nearly half a century as the founder of modern Romanian statehood.

The steel crown of the Romanian kings was made from the metal of a Turkish cannon captured at Plevna — a permanent monument to the war that won Romania its independence.

Key Battles

The Siege of Plevna

Russia & Balkan Allies victory

July 20 – December 10, 1877 · 65,000 total casualties

Plevna pinned the entire Russian offensive for five months, nearly wrecked the campaign, and made Osman Pasha a hero across Europe. Its lesson — that entrenched infantry with breech-loading rifles could slaughter attacking columns — was studied by every army and foreshadowed the trenches of 1914.
