Suleiman Pasha

Marshal, Ottoman Army

Born: 1838 · Constantinople (Istanbul), Ottoman Empire
Died: 1892 · Baghdad, Ottoman Empire (in exile)
Education: Ottoman Military Academy; later its director
Pre-war: Reformist officer and military educator
"The pass must be taken whatever the cost."

Biography

An energetic and ambitious Ottoman commander, Suleiman Pasha led the ferocious summer assaults on the Russian and Bulgarian defenders of the Shipka Pass, hurling his men up the bare slopes again and again at terrible cost without ever quite breaking through. His failure to take Shipka — and his poor coordination with Osman Pasha at Plevna — became a subject of bitter recrimination. Given command of the last Ottoman armies in Thrace, he was decisively beaten by Gurko at Plovdiv in January 1878 as Ottoman resistance collapsed. Blamed for the catastrophe, Suleiman was court-martialled after the war, convicted, and disgraced. His career embodied the Ottoman tragedy of the war: brave, aggressive soldiers undone by divided command, poor logistics, and an enemy who had learned to entrench.

Did you know?

Before the war he had been a noted military reformer and head of the Ottoman war college; afterward he was court-martialled and exiled for the loss of Thrace.

Russia & Balkan Allies victory

January 15–17, 1878 · 6,000 total casualties

The rout at Plovdiv left nothing between the Russian army and Constantinople, forcing the Ottomans to seek an armistice within days.
