Brigadier General, Commander of the Israeli Air Force
"Our pilots knew the exact position of every aircraft on every Egyptian airfield. We knew their names."
Mordechai Hod was the architect of the most devastating air strike in history. As Commander of the Israeli Air Force from 1966, he inherited plans for a preemptive strike on Arab air forces that his predecessors had developed — and he refined them to a level of precision that would have seemed impractical to any other air force. Israeli intelligence had mapped every Arab airfield, identified the position of every major aircraft, tracked pilot schedules, identified radar coverage gaps, and calculated the exact times when command and control would be weakest. The low-level approach over the Mediterranean to avoid radar was his innovation — a calculated gamble that the Egyptians were not watching the sea. On the morning of June 5, he launched 183 aircraft in tight formation at 7:45 a.m. — the moment his intelligence said Egyptian pilots would be at breakfast. Three hours later, 300 Arab aircraft had been destroyed. Hod's operational planning reduced the Arab-Israeli war to a foregone conclusion before most of the world had finished breakfast.
Did you know?
Hod had been planning Operation Focus for years before 1967 — obsessively studying Egyptian airfield layouts, pilot schedules, radar coverage gaps, and refueling procedures. He told his pilots exactly which Egyptian pilots ate breakfast where and when shifts changed at radar stations. The strike's precision was the product of intelligence collection that bordered on fanatical.
June 5, 1967 · 450 total casualties
Operation Focus was one of the most decisive military strikes in history. Destroying Arab air power in the first hours gave Israel total air superiority for the entire six-day war. Every Israeli ground operation that followed was protected by aircraft while Arab columns were destroyed from the air. Without Focus, Israel would have faced a very different war.
