Biography

Known universally as 'Hemedti' — a childhood nickname — Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo is one of Africa's most powerful warlords, having transformed himself from a camel trader to the commander of a 100,000-strong paramilitary force through decades of violence, opportunism, and ruthlessness. He built the RSF from the remnants of the Janjaweed militias that committed genocide in Darfur. His forces have deployed to Saudi Arabia's Yemen war, mined gold across Sudan's west, and now contest control of an entire country. He operates from a command structure that moves constantly and is backed by the UAE, which values him as a counterweight to Islamist political forces.

Did you know?

He controls gold mines across Darfur and reportedly exports gold through the UAE, giving him an independent revenue stream of hundreds of millions of dollars per year that funds the RSF independently of any government.

Key Battles

Battle of Khartoum

Rapid Support Forces (RSF) victory

April 15, 2023 – Present · 20,000 total casualties

Khartoum had not seen urban warfare since the 1885 Siege of Khartoum during the Mahdist War. The eruption of fighting in the capital of an African country of 45 million people — with direct implications for the entire region — was one of 2023's most significant geopolitical events. The international community's inability to stop the fighting or protect civilians reflected the limits of post-Cold War conflict resolution architecture.

Battle of Omdurman

Rapid Support Forces (RSF) victory

April 2023 – 2024 · 10,000 total casualties

Omdurman's fall to the RSF cut off the SAF's western supply routes into Khartoum and signaled the RSF's strategic dominance of the greater Khartoum area. It also demonstrated the RSF's deliberate use of civilian infrastructure as military cover — a tactic that would become systematic across the war.

RSF Darfur Offensive

Rapid Support Forces (RSF) victory

April – December 2023 · 15,000 total casualties

The Darfur offensive bore unmistakable hallmarks of the 2003–08 genocide, committed by many of the same RSF commanders and allied militias, against the same ethnic communities, with the same patterns of violence. UN investigators and human rights organizations documented acts constituting genocide. The International Criminal Court, which had indicted Omar al-Bashir for the earlier genocide, opened new investigations.
