August 24–25, 1814
British troops occupied Washington after defeating an American force at Bladensburg and burned public buildings, including the Capitol and President’s House. The raid was partly framed as retaliation for American destruction in Upper Canada. Most private property was spared by order, though looting and destruction also occurred.
