Bronze-age aristocratic chariot combat gave way to mass armies of conscript infantry, crossbowmen, and — after Zhao's reforms — mounted archers, equipped with increasingly effective iron weapons and armor produced in state workshops. Above all it was the mechanical trigger crossbow, cheap to make and murderous in volleys, that defined the age's battlefields and made the disciplined infantry of Qin nearly unstoppable.

Massed crossbow ranks — firing in rotating lines to keep up a continuous storm — shattered charges and were the killing instrument at battles like Maling.

Significance

While others still carried short bronze swords limited by the metal's brittleness, Qin smiths mastered an alloy and casting technique that produced blades nearly a metre long — giving Qin infantry crucial reach in the press. Examples recovered from the Terracotta Army pits emerged straight and still sharp after two millennia, some bearing an anti-corrosion chromium surface treatment.

Ji (Dagger-Axe Halberd)

The polearm of the massed infantry, combining a spear point for thrusting with a transverse dagger-axe blade for hooking and hacking. Wielded in dense hedgehog formations, ranks of ji-armed infantry formed the solid core against which crossbows and cavalry did their work.

The four-horse war chariot, symbol of the old aristocratic warfare, still rolled onto Warring States battlefields — a state's strength was once counted in 'ten thousand chariots' — but its day was ending. Cumbersome on broken ground and vulnerable to crossbows, chariots were steadily eclipsed by cheaper, more flexible infantry and cavalry.

Mounted Archers (Zhao's Cavalry Reform)

Around 307 BC King Wuling of Zhao, facing steppe nomads, forced his court to adopt 'barbarian dress' — trousers in place of robes — and build China's first true cavalry of mounted archers modeled on the Xiongnu. Fast, flexible, and deadly on the northern plains, this cavalry let Li Mu smash the nomads and gave Zhao the mobile arm that made it Qin's most dangerous rival.

Significance

Qin's true weapon was organizational: universal registration and conscription that could put armies of several hundred thousand disciplined peasant-soldiers into the field, motivated by Shang Yang's system of rank-for-heads and terrified by collective punishment for cowardice. Cheaper and more abundant than bronze, iron helped arm the ever-larger conscript hosts.

When walls could not be stormed, water was turned against them. At Jinyang the Zhi clan diverted a river to drown the city (before their allies turned the flood back on them), and at Daliang in 225 BC the Qin general Wang Ben breached the dikes of the Yellow River and its canals to inundate the Wei capital until its walls dissolved.

Inscriptions on Qin arms even name the responsible official, enforcing quality by accountability.

King Wuling of Zhao's adoption of steppe-style mounted archery around 307 BC — over the fierce objection of a court that scorned 'barbarian dress' — created China's first true cavalry and a template every state rushed to copy. For the first time Chinese armies had a fast, flexible mobile arm able to fight the nomads on their own terms and to turn the flanks of infantry hosts.

Fielding and feeding armies of several hundred thousand for campaigns lasting years demanded unprecedented logistics: state granaries, canal transport, conscripted supply labor, and the mobilization of whole populations. The three-year standoff at Changping was ultimately a contest of who could keep a vast army fed.
