Biography
The last great general of the last state that could resist Qin. Li Mu first made his name on Zhao's northern frontier, where he lulled the Xiongnu nomads with feigned timidity for years before springing a colossal ambush that destroyed 100,000 horsemen and secured the border for a decade. Turned against Qin, he twice defeated its invading armies in the 230s BC — the only commander still able to beat Qin in the field. Because they could not overcome him by arms, the Qin resorted to gold: they bribed the corrupt Zhao minister Guo Kai to whisper that Li Mu was plotting treason. The Zhao king ordered him to surrender his command; when Li Mu, knowing the state's survival depended on him, refused, he was seized and executed. Within months Wang Jian took the Zhao capital. Li Mu's death is remembered as the moment resistance to Qin became truly hopeless — a state destroying its own protector at the enemy's bidding.
