British commanders in the Opium Wars pioneered the coordination of steam-powered naval vessels with infantry and artillery in river environments. The method — steam gunboats suppressing shore defenses while infantry landed from flat-bottomed boats under covering fire — was a template for projecting power far inland along river systems. The same doctrine would be used in the American Civil War (Mississippi River), the colonial wars in Africa, and the Yangtze Patrol that continued in China until 1941.

Riverine warfare doctrine developed in the Opium Wars remained tactically relevant for a century. China's Self-Strengthening Movement ultimately failed — its limits were exposed by Japan's victory in 1895. But the conceptual problem it attempted to solve — how to modernize without Westernizing — remained the central dilemma of modernizing states throughout the 20th century. Elements of it are visible in the Singapore model, in China's post-1978 economic reform, and in authoritarian modernization efforts globally.
