2025 – February 2026
Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, spent much of 2025 cut off by the RSF and its SPLM-N allies, in famine conditions — one of only a handful of places on earth where famine has been formally identified. Shelling repeatedly struck civilian areas, and the siege drew in the older war in the Nuba Mountains, where the SPLM-N had fought Khartoum long before 2023. In late January 2026 the army reported opening the road to Dilling, halfway between Kadugli and El Obeid, and on February 3 it said it had reached Kadugli and broken the siege. The RSF answered with a drone strike that killed eight civilians within hours and said its forces remained nearby. The army had to reopen the Dilling road again in May, and drone and air attacks on the corridor continued — a WFP convoy between Dilling and Kadugli was struck on October 3, 2026 — but supply convoys were reaching the city.
