Biography

An economist who spent decades working for the UN Economic Commission for Africa, Abdalla Hamdok was the civilian face of Sudan's 2019 pro-democracy transition — the closest Sudan came to genuine democratic governance in its modern history. Appointed prime minister after al-Bashir's fall, he implemented economic reforms, removed Sudan from US terrorism designations, and began normalizing diplomatic relations. He survived an assassination attempt in March 2020. He was arrested in the October 2021 military coup, briefly reinstated under international pressure, and then resigned in January 2022, warning that the country was headed for catastrophe — a prediction that came true sixteen months later.

Did you know?

He survived a car bomb assassination attempt in March 2020 — widely attributed to remnants of the Bashir-era security apparatus who opposed the transition — and continued governing despite the attempt.

Key Battles

Battle of Khartoum

Rapid Support Forces (RSF) victory

April 15, 2023 – Present · 20,000 total casualties

Khartoum had not seen urban warfare since the 1885 Siege of Khartoum during the Mahdist War. The eruption of fighting in the capital of an African country of 45 million people — with direct implications for the entire region — was one of 2023's most significant geopolitical events. The international community's inability to stop the fighting or protect civilians reflected the limits of post-Cold War conflict resolution architecture.
